What Are Dental Implants?

As dentistry technology has advanced, so has the process of fixing or replacing teeth. Dental implants are a great way to restore your mouth’s function and give you your beautiful smile back – all in the most efficient and effective way. These require little to no extra maintenance to your oral care.

So, what are dental implants? A dental implant is an artificial tooth that replaces a tooth all the way to the root. These implants will typically have three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the crown.

  • The implant is the part that serves as the new root for your tooth. These are typically made from titanium alloy. The screw is what attaches to the jaw permanently to create a strong base for the other pieces to fit into.

  • Next, the abutment is the piece of the implant that connects the tooth to the implant base. This will secure and hold the tooth in place.

  • Lastly, the crown is the part you will see with your new smile. This piece is usually made from zirconium or porcelain for added durability.

At Albany Family Dentistry we have a special machine that can create the crown right in our office. Our machine precisely carves the tooth to match the exact area being fitted. This process takes around 30 minutes, so patients are able to get fitted and have the crown added in the same appointment.

This machine at Albany Family Dentistry makes the crown within the same visit using water and precise carving.
